The Value of Vacations

I am on vacation!

It's great to be ambitious and hardworking and dedicated to your career goals. And ---psychologists tell us it's also essential to take a break.

Anne Lamott, who’s one of my favorite writers says, “Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you."

And that's hard for me because I can go, go, go, go, go!

In fact, my friends laugh when I say, “If Henry and I had lived together before we got married, I would have thrown in a load of laundry on our wedding night!”

That's Henry right there! Can you see him?

Think about your own day-to-day demands: meetings, Zooming, decision making, leading, presenting, creating, or simply talking about work. It can be exhausting…even if you love what you do, and you’re energized by it.

So, if possible, make plans to get away. It doesn't have to be a big vacation. Nothing extravagant. Just go somewhere, away from your office and your laptop where you don't have to be brilliant or decisive or clever or "on-call."

Give yourself the space to think about what you want to go back to work with and what you want to leave behind. Or think about nothing at all...which is exactly what I'm doing this vacation. I'm trying only to think about the fun events of the day…including shell hunting and breathing!

Ultimately, my taking time off is better for my clients and it’s better for me.

So now, back to my vacation! See you next month! And, as always, thank you so much for reading!
